Last weekend we took our first family “vacation” down the thruway to Erie, PA. B had been wanting to check out Presque Isle State Park for a while now, and we thought we’d also visit the Erie Zoo while we were there. S has never left the state, and has never stayed in a hotel, so we thought it would be neat to see how that would turn out. S did remarkably well in the hotel, and he loved the swimming pool and breakfast buffet.

Anyway, we headed out on Sunday morning and made it to Erie around lunchtime. We enjoyed a nice picnic along Presque Isle Bay, and they continued further into the park to see the lighthouses. It was a lot of getting in and out of the car, and if S were a bit bigger I think we would have parked the car someplace and committed to a longer walk, but the fact of the matter was we wanted to see too many different things and the park is just so large! The first lighthouse we saw was actually accessible only by the beach, which we did not know going into this. So we were the people on the beach with socks and sneakers. S had never been to the beach either, and it turns out that he was scared of the water, or the waves more specifically. He’d be curious, and then he would run away as each wave came in. It was cute. We saw a few more sights including another lighthouse and the Perry Monument, before heading to our hotel.

We went straight for the pool at the hotel, and S loved it! He was splashing and kicking and laughing, I think it was his favorite part of the trip.

Later, we ate dinner at the Texas Roadhouse, came back to the hotel and basically crashed. S was asleep in the middle of our king bed by 8:15 and he was out. I was worried we’d be keeping him up or vice versa, but it worked out fine.

The next day, we had breakfast at the hotel, swam again, and then headed to the Erie Zoo. My parents and brother met us there and we enjoyed seeing all of the animals. S enjoyed the train ride around the zoo as well, and then we all went to a late lunch a Eat-n-Park.

We had a really nice time, and we discovered a few more things in Erie that we’d like to check out. We plan to go back again for sure! I was very glad to find out how S does in a hotel, as we will all be staying in one next summer when B’s sister gets married. At least now we have a better idea of what to expect, and I can plan for it!
