The problem with calling both sets of grandparents “Grandma and Grandpa” is that it is confusing to everyone. For us, the statement “We’re going to Grandma and Grandpa’s!” can mean two entirely different things.

One Choice: It means that we are going to go visit Grandma and Grandpa across town, probably eat a meal, play, and then come home.

Other Choice: It means we are going to pack up a bunch of stuff, drive for a few hours before arriving at Grandma and Grandpa’s house where we will sleep in a different bed in a different room and take a bath in a different tub and come home a few days later.

This weekend we did the second choice. Little man is getting to the point where he resists change and he understands a lot more of what is happening around him. He was Not Happy about the new tub and the new bed or the drive. He was happy about seeing his grandparents and doing all of the fun things we did though. Overall it was a great weekend and a nice time.

I realized our failure to prepare him properly for this visit when the first thing he did when we came home was smile and giggle at the sight of our bathtub, then run around and check on his toys.

Next time I will explain it better. Poor kiddo probably thought he’d never see our house again!
